This document is written with the assumption you have a general understanding of basic Windows® commands in order to perform the procedures detailed below. When possible, we try to describe the entire process in full detail. However, different system configurations often require different procedures to perform these actions. For assistance with those procedures, please consult the Microsoft Windows manual or online help system.

Many issues can be solved by obtaining newer versions of the software. To determine the version of the software that you currently have, please look at the title of the software which came with your product. Any necessary patch files mentioned in this document can be obtained from the Mouse File Download Page.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to solve some issues, this document makes references to editing the Windows Registry. For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" online Help topic in Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).

Make a backup copy of the registry before you edit the registry.

WARNING: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly may cause symptoms requiring a reinstallation of Windows. Logitech is not responsible for issues which may result from incorrect use of the Registry Editor. Use the Registry Editor at your own discretion. The Registry Editor should only be used to make the exact changes described.

NOTE: DO NOT plug or unplug a PS/2 type mouse while the system is powered on. This can damage both the PS/2 mouse port and the mouse hardware.

Q: I installed MouseWare and when the computer boots, I get a blue screen with an "OE Exception" error. I can still press [Enter] and get into Windows, but the blue screen appears each time I boot. What's wrong?
A: IBM has identified a problem with the version 1.10 of the TrackPoint drivers that produces a blue screen on bootup if the mouse drivers are changed. The workaround for this issue is to uninstall the IBM TrackPoint software through the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Windows Control Panel.

Q: I have an IBM ThinkPad computer which has an internal pointing device. I have connected a Logitech 3 or 4 button roller/wheel pointing device to the mouse port and installed the software. Both mice work at the same time, but when I open the Enhanced Mouse Control Center the picture of the mouse only shows 2 buttons. Also the roller/wheel and or 4th button does not function. How do I get this mouse to detect and function properly?
A: Currently, there are three options to enable full functionality of a Logitech Pointing device on these systems. The first option is to obtain the latest version of the Logitech MouseWare.

The second option is to attach the Logitech pointing device to USB or Serial port using the Logitech adaptor (if your device supports it). This will allow you to use both the Logitech device and the integrated pointing device together.

The third option to enable full functionality of the Logitech pointing device on these systems will require three steps. This option is for customers who already use the serial port for other devices or who wish to use the PS/2 mouse port.

Step One
First you must edit the Registry by doing the following (see IMPORTANT NOTE above):

Click on the "Start" menu and select "Run".
On the "Open" line, type:
REGEDIT

Open the following path, depending on the operating system being used:

If Windows 2000/XP is being used, open HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\l8042pr2\Parameters
If Windows 95/98/Me is being used, open HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Logitech\Mouseware\CurrentVersion
If Windows NT 4.0 is being used, open HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\l8042prt\Parameters

Double click on the "PS2" folder.
Under "PS2", click on the "0000" folder to highlight it.
On the right side of the Registry editor, double click on the "ab" value labeled, "NumberOfButtons". The Edit String dialog box will appear.
Change the data value from "2" to "3" if using a 3 button mouse, or "4" if using a 4 button mouse, and click "OK".
Double click on the "ab" value, "DeviceModel".
In the Edit String dialog box, change the entry from "PS2" to the device model which matches your particular mouse using the list of Logitech wheel/roller Pointing Devices shown below. If you are not sure which device you have, check the "M/N" number on the bottom of the pointing device to identify the DeviceModel string. To determine the valid value for the "DeviceModel=" string, please obtain Customer Support Document #4554, "Matrices of Device, Model Numbers, Connections and Valid 'DeviceModel=' Strings".
For example, if you have a MouseMan Wheel attached to the mouse port of your notebook, change the value data line from "PS2" to "WheelMouse2", and click the "OK" button. Exit the Registry editor (saving is automatic). Then, shut down and restart the computer. Once the computer has rebooted, open the Enhanced Mouse Control Center and verify the pointing device picture is correct.

Step Two
Once the correct picture is showing in the Enhanced Mouse Control Center, you must disable the IBM pointer stick. Disabling the internal pointer stick will enable the wheel/roller or 4th button of the Logitech Pointing device to function.

Please follow the steps below to disable the internal pointer stick on the Thinkpad 500/700 series:

Shut down the computer, then power it back on
Press and hold F1 key until Setup menu appears
Select "Config"
Select "Keyboard"
Select "Disable" for the TrackPoint
Click "OK"
Click "Exit"
Click "Restart"
Click "OK"
Please follow the steps below to disable the internal pointer stick on the Thinkpad 770 series with a newer BIOS:

Click on the "Start" button on the Windows 95 Desktop.
Select "Programs", then "ThinkPad".
Select "ThinkPad Configuration", then "Hardware".
Now follow the on-screen instructions for disabling the internal pointer stick.
Step Three
Lastly, when the system has rebooted, open the Device Manager by going to the "Start" button, "Settings", then "Control Panel". From the Windows 95/98 Control panel double click the System icon and go to the Device Manager tab. Double click the Mouse Icon, and then highlight the Mouse Type Icon. Now click on the Properties button and verify there is NO check mark under "Device Usage" that states:

"Disable in this Hardware Profile"

If so, remove the check mark and reboot. You should have the correct picture in the Enhanced Mouse Properties and the wheel/roller and/or 4th button should now be functional.
