PROBLEMS OF DEFINING CULTUREOne of the fundamental problems in cross-culture is an inadequate definition of culture as a moderator. Most studies fail to specify the role of culture as a moderator exante. It✀s also difficult to assess why and to what extend culture operates as a moderator. Operational specification is another important element. The problem of adequately defining and measuring culture is one of the key challenges confronting cross-cultural methodology. Ajiferuke and Boddewyn✀s suggest that culture , though used as an independent variable, has a rather ,obscure identity; it seems to be used as a residual variable.Negandhi also points out that the postulated relationship between culture and attitudes, attitudes and behavior, and behavior and organizational effectiveness raises a whole set of conceptual and methodological issues.Negandhi suggests that Kluckhohn and strodtbeck✀s definition , w✀hich relies on the concept of value orientation, is useful for cross-cultural management research,Triandis’s definition is also useful: subjective culture is a group’s characteristic way of responding to its social environment. Triandis’s typology is useful because it provides a good operational definition of cultureTriandis has broken down the dimensions of cultural differences into three categories: perceptual differentiations, utilization and evaluation of information, and patterns of action.Trandis vies cultural complexity as linked to pragmatism, situational use of many values, situational use of associative versus abstractive mental processes, and little sex differentiation.Trandis demonstrates how the various managerial functions may be linked with the various dimensions of culture.
