The first tallate driers were .dark in color, veryviscous at the standard 6,6,24 metal conen, and poorlysoluble in paint vehicles. To overcome these defects, the drier solutions were supplied at metal contentsof 4,4 and 16%, which corresponded to an averagenon-volatile or metal soap content of ca. 50%.After World War II, advances in tall oil refiningresulted in tall oil acids of improved color and loweraverage combining wt. Simultaneously, improvementswere made in the processes of manufacturing driersthrough the use of stabilizers, solubilizers and viscositymodifiers, such as dibutyl tartrate (1), alkyl acidphosphates (2) and others. As a result, tallate driersare today equal in color and solubility characteristicsto their naphthenate counterparts. They are suppliedat the standard 6,6,24 metal concn, which correspondto an average nonvolatile content of ca. 70% comparedto 60% for the naphthenates. Despite this appreciabledifference in nonvolatile content, only minor differencesin viscosity exist between tallate and naphthenatedriers.
